Latina crowned 'America's Next Top Model'

CHICAGO - 20-year-old Jaslene Gonzalez became the first Latina to be crowned “America's Next Top Model" bearing Natasha Galkina from Russia and Renee Alway in the process. Gonzalez, who failed to make the cut, last year won the $100,000 contract for US Cover Girl.

She will also be represented by Elite Model Management for one year besides being featured in a six-page spread in Seventeen magazine. This is the show's eighth series and Gonzalez had indicated at the beginning that she was destines to be a model.

"Every little girl has a dream to be something and to be here, I overcame so much," she said after her win. "I didn't make it the first time but, now, look at me ... That shows to all young women, if you have that drive, keep going. Second time around, and I'm America's Next Top Model."

It appeared that Alway was always the better competitor, but producers felt she looked much older than her 20 years. As far as Galkina was concerned, her Russian origin supposedly tipped the stakes against her.
